The Rifleman Revisited: Our Ode to Chuck Conners

06/02/2021

A customer asked us to replicate the Winchester 92 Chuck Conners carried in The Rifleman as a unique gift for his son who graduates from medical school soon. However, there was an extra twist to the project - since our customer wanted the caliber to be .30-30 instead of .44-40 Win, we had to track down a base model Winchester 94.

Let me tell you, sourcing a Winchester 94 (or any lever action for that matter) was nigh impossible last year during the pandemic. After several months of searching, we at last acquired a used 94 plus all the components. Then the real work began.

⚡️ We fit, installed, and headspaced a new, period-correct 30-30 Win 20" barrel to replace the original, pitted barrel. We then installed a big loop lever followed by an action job to tune the rifle up to tip-top shape. The tune-up makes the lever movement as smooth as butter.
⚡️ Inlet & installed a new forend and buttstock. After all fitting was complete, our woodsmith shaped, sanded, and refinished them both with a hand-rubbed oil finish.
⚡️ All metal, except the receiver, was high-polished and coated with a clear Cerakote finish.
⚡️ Our engraver lasered the receiver with the actual pattern of an early Winchester 1866 (so cool!) along with the initials of the new owner. The final step was Cerakoting it with a brass-like color to mimic the original Winchester brass receiver.
